Outdoor Activities - Sightseeing and Day Tours
Guests come to Lochaber for many reasons but for most touring the Scottish Highlands is the highlight of their holiday.
Go as quickly or as slowly as you wish and spend your days sightseeing and experiencing the best of Glencoe, Fort William and the magnificent area which surrounds us.
Here are just a few ideas for day tours and trips:
The Road to The Isles
Take signs for Mallaig from Fort William. Stop on route at historic Glenfinnan or just to enjoy the view. At Arisaig and beyond enjoy the Silver Sands and views over the Hebrides and the Cuillin of Skye.
Ardnamurchan
Cross the Corran Ferry where the long and winding route to Ardnamurchan Point rewards the persistent driver. Single track road has lovely views along the way of Scots Pine, Loch Sunart and the Hebrides. Impressive lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula is the most westerly point of the British mainland. Nearby Sanna bay is delightful on sunny days. For something different hop on the summer only ferry to Tobermory for lunch.
Appin and Oban
The Oban road takes in historic Kidnapped country and views of Castle Stalker with possible diversions to Cuil Bay and Lismore. A detour round the head of Loch Creran is worthwhile in early summer to visit the Gardens at Drumavuic House. Oban itself is a busy fishing port with lots of character. Call in to the Café Caledonian for lunch.
Iona and Staffa
Take a whole day for this long but worthwhile journey to the cradle of British Christianity. Visit the Abbey and explore the colourful rocky and sandy beaches of this lovely Island. Take the Mull Ferry, then follow signs to Fionnphort where you take the passenger ferry. Alternatively take an organised tour from the Pier and combine a visit to Staffa. This world famous Island is now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. When you arrive you will instantly understand why Staffa has long been an inspiration for many musicians and artists.
Boat Tours
It’s not surprising that boat trips are popular with all of our visitors!
Lochaber Watersports is right next door to The Isles of Glencoe Hotel and offers discounts to our guests. Those who enjoy boat trips will love the exhilarating fast RIB ride on the loch. Those who like to get close to the water can hire a canoe or small boat and paddle out to the historic burial islands in the middle of Loch Leven.
Sailing trips, loch cruises and island trips are all easy to arrange and a day on the water will make holidays all the more memorable. A Calmac ferry trip is an must for an holiday to the West Coast of Scotland. Regular sailings go from Oban to Mull, Iona and many other of the Western Isles. Many of the island trips can be done under your own steam or as part of organised tours.
Favourite trips and destinations include Loch Linnhe and Loch Leven, Loch Shiel and of course, the many magical islands which lie off Scotland’s West Coast.
