Things to do in Glencoe and the Scottish Highlands
Spectacular scenery provides plenty to explore either by car, bike, on foot or by boat. Glencoe is an ideal base for the adventure seeker with activities for all and with such a wealth of things to see and do here in Lochaber it can be difficult to decide exactly what to do each day! Many of our guests choose to stay for an extra day or two to allow them to complete their sightseeing at a more leisurely pace.
By foot explore the dramatic and historic landscape with a short walk or full on mountain climbing. Stroll around the Glencoe Lochan, a man made lochan set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Accessible paths for prams and wheelchairs.
If the weather is not on your side take to The Ice Factor where you can climb indoors on rock, boulder or ice. Instruction is available for those willing to take up the challenge.
From January to March take to the slopes at Glencoe Mountain or Nevis Range and take advantage of the great skiing and snowboarding conditions.
By water ease your way in with a loch cruise, ferry ride or sail on the calm loch's. Move up a gear to rib rides, watersports, canoeing, white water rafting and diving! Cruise Loch Linnhe from Fort William Town Pier on the Souters Lass. Sail Loch Linnhe to Seal Island on this charming boat and see herons, oystercatchers, eider ducks, swans, seals and the odd porpoise.
By wheels on 2 and 4 wheels, mountain biking and rally karting are available as well as endless scenic drives. Take a drive along the banks of Loch Linnhe to the bustling port of Oban. Stroll along the waterfront, browse the shops and stop off for lunch at our sister hotel, The Oban Caledonian. If you have time on your hands take the scenic route along the A85 and return home through Glencoe.
By horseback trekking through the countryside of the Highlands of Scotland at your own pace, suitable for all ages.
The superb Lochaber Water Sports facility is located nearby the hotel and offers boat, canoe and bike hire. It also runs fishing trips and exhilerating 'Rib rides'. There is a 9 Hole golf course, adjacent to the hotel and The Glencoe Mountain Resort offers various summer activities to partner the renowned winter snowsports resort.
Nevis Range, Scotland's highest ski area is situated just 17 miles away and for those after more intense thrill, only 5 miles from The Ballachulish Hotel, Vertical Descents is a modern outdoor adventure activity centre offering a wide range of exhilarating activities including Canyoning, White Water Rafting, Fun Yakking, Bridge Swing, Paintball and Mountain Biking.
The Ice Factor is just 10 miles from The Ballachulish Hotel and is ideally placed to make it one of the best places to learn about climbing in Britain. As well as being the biggest indoor ice climbing facility in the world, The Ice Factor features the UK's largest articulated rock climbing wall and a competition-standard bouldering hall.
No visit to Scotland is complete without a visit to a working Scotch Malt Whisky Distillery. Ben Nevis Distillery established in 1825, is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland, just 16 miles from The Ballachulish Hotel. The Oban Distillery, looks out to sea from the town centre of Oban which grew up around the Distillery.
And if you are looking for an even closer event while staying at the hotel, our Murder Mystery Hotel Breaks make a very special winter dinner evening. To find out more about our themed evenings with plenty of fun and entertainment, please click here
